Where do Black Pearls come from?

First of all, they are also being referred to as Tahitian Pearls. As the name implies, the vast majority of these black pearls are being harvested around the atolls that surround Tahiti. They are extremely rare and even though it has been tried to cultivate them artificially almost every attempt has failed so far. In order to protect the oyster beds from damages, the government of Tahiti has issued various regulations that make black pearls even more attractive as the supply of them is very limited.

How to tell a real black pearl from an imitation?

As black pearls are both rare and expensive, there is a strong incentive to produce imitations. There is nothing wrong about imitations that mimic the appearance of a black pearl as long as the vendor refrains from selling them as black pearls. Most of these imitations are produced by covering a core of plastic or glass with a coating that gives the consumer the impression of a black pearl.

Here are a few ways to distinguish a real black pearl from a fake:

# Some of the cheaper imitations will be covered by small grains or can have bumps. These do generally not occur on natural pearls, which may be an indicator for a fake pearl.

# Original black pearls will have a smooth coating rather than the dull one that is typical to imitations.

# If you inspect a real black pearl under good light conditions you will see lots of light reflections. In case these are either blurred or non-existent there is a strong possibility of this one being a fake.

Buying an imitation can be a perfect way to save a serious amount of money if both partners agree to this. In case you buy a high-quality black pearl imitation people inspecting the pearl will have a hard time to tell whether it is real or not. In the end, you should ask yourself whether this really matters to you? Are you intending to buy a black pearl for the appearance or for prestige reasons? In case you tend towards the former, the imitation will surely fulfill all your demands and leave money in your pockets that can be spent on other issues.

Where can I buy black pearls?

There is a scarcity of black pearls on the market as outlined earlier on. This translates into limited availability of these pearls on the market. Typically, these are utilized in order to produce necklaces - Most jewelers that carry these will usually carry a few pearl engagement rings in their sortiment or will at least be able to either help you with creating your own one or refer you to a merchant that is able to cater to your needs.

One of the ways to avoid future hassle is to insist on receiving a Certificate of Authenticity with your purchase of a black pearl. This certificate should include the written statement that you are about to purchase a real black pearl and the information which authority inspected this pearl.
