Diamond Color

COLOR

Every diamond is different. The price equation is simple: less colour, higher price. The Gemological Institute of America has introduced several colour grades that allow the direct comparison of different stones. Starting with the letter D, it assigns a colour code to every diamond. Whereas D, E and F indicate a colourless diamond, a rating of X, Y and Z means that you have got a light yellow diamond in front of you.

Why is there no A, B and C, you may ask. Noone really knows. Fact is that the grading starts with D and goes up to Z, D being the most expensive and Z the cheapest quality. How much difference is there between the different letters? Not much, really. Think of the way diamonds are depicted in the movies: Specialists sitting at their desks using a loupe to magnify the gemstones in order to rate them according to quality. The untrained eye is hardly able to tell a D from an F without any assistance from a professional. Summarizing, this paragraph is an argument not to go for the best quality at any cost. Your partner probably won't be able to tell a D from an F grade diamond, as well.
