Claddagh Rings: Are they Hot or Not?



Claddagh rings are one of the most popular Irish jewelry pieces in history. These rings were designed with three distinct features along with their respective meanings – the clasping hands (friendship), the heart (love) and the crown (loyalty). Although the Claddagh rings dates back to over 300 years, the design remains the same until today, making them ideal as a wedding or engagement ring, friendship band and rings to signify faith, love, friendship and loyalty. Originating in a little fishing village in Ireland called ‘Claddagh’, these rings have reached other parts of the world.

Today, the Claddagh rings are still being used for Irish weddings, as they are traditionally passed down from mother to daughter in Ireland. However, it also became a popular ring around the world when people discovered that these rings could suggest different meanings. For instance, an engaged or married person wears the Claddagh ring on the left hand with the crown pointing away from the wearer’s heart, while someone willing to consider love can wear the ring on the right hand with the crown pointing away from the heart. Someone who does not intend to pursue a romantic relationship simply wears the Claddagh ring on the right hand with the crown pointing towards the heart.

Unlike the old designs with only one variation, the Claddagh rings today come in different designs – some with two hearts, others with no crowns. The Claddagh rings popular today have gemstones set in the heart of the ring. Other jewelers also create their own designs, but with the original features of the Claddagh intact. You can even ask some jewelers for a customized Claddagh or request a short message to be etched inside the band. The Claddagh rings today are available in gold, silver and all-gemstone options. Whichever design you choose, a Claddagh ring offers a personalized way to show someone how you feel by keeping the ring’s traditional meaning, but with a modern twist.
